Exec Changes at Cheezburger

Amber Dunn joins the Cheezburger team as our new CRO, replacing current CRO Todd Sawicki who is moving into the role of Cheezburger’s VP of Audience. Welcome, Amber!

Press release below:

Amber Dunn Joins Cheezburger as Chief Revenue Officer, Todd Sawicki Moves to VP of Audience.

Seattle, WA — September 6th, 2012 — Cheezburger named Amber Dunn as its new Chief Revenue Officer on Tuesday. Todd Sawicki, Cheezburger’s current Chief Revenue Officer, will move into the role of Vice President of Audience. Both executives will report directly to the CEO.

As CRO, Dunn will be responsible for all of Cheezburger’s advertising sales, marketing, merchandise and licensing efforts. Dunn most recently served as the Senior Vice President at AllRecipes.com — the world’s largest digital food brand — where she grew the company’s annual ad revenues over 100% year-over-year for 4 consecutive years. Dunn was also a key member of the executive team that recently sold AllRecipes.com to Meredith for $175 million.

Cheezburger CEO Ben Huh noted, “We’re very excited to bring on Amber. Amber’s experience building significant revenue for the world’s most successful user contributed content platform for food will help drive Cheezburger’s growing native advertising products for social humor content.”

Sawicki’s new position as Vice President of Audience means he will oversee all consumer-facing teams — content, social media, and community engagement — a role that was filled by Huh for the past year. Sawicki will also add responsibilities for content business development and consumer marketing.

“The VP of Audience role is one of the most critical at Cheezburger, and Todd is uniquely capable of driving user engagement and continued traffic growth. Since joining Cheezburger in 2009, Todd grew our revenues almost 10x, launched both our brand advertising programs and our popular merchandise business, and oversaw the publishing of 5 books including a NY Times bestseller. Todd is uniquely qualified to head our efforts to be the leading next generation media brand and the #1 humor platform in the world,” said Huh.

Memes: The Next Big Thing for Brands

Peanut butter and jelly. Poptart cats and rainbows. Memes and advertising.

A recent Businessweek.com article focuses on the growing trend of brands like Nike, Nokia, Lipton, Vitamin Warer and others using Internet memes as part of their advertising. Why?

“Memes are a tremendous asset for brands because, like celebrities, they have an audience that recognizes and appreciates them.”

The familiar banners that have been vehicles for brand messaging in years past are now just one piece of the online advertising puzzle. It’s not always enough to just see a picture or animation of a product you might be interested in: consumers are also looking to connect with a brand by directly engaging them and creating and remixing their content.

The key will be staying true to your brand voice and your consumers and not trying to take it too far.
- HuffPo: Banners Are Here to Stay

Cheezburger’s popular meme and humor platform is a proven method for promoting brands via native advertising. Because our users visit daily to create and remix memes and share their sense of humor with others, Cheezburger is a perfect place for them to also creatively engage with a brand’s identity.

Brands like Toyota Yaris and Kraft come to us for our experience with memes:

Sometimes our campaigns win awards:

Simply put: our knowledge of memes and our clever, funny audience (the most engaged of any humor publisher) make us the best place to promote your brand.

“You as the person who created something are not the most valuable person on the chain,” says Ben Huh, CEO of Cheezburger. … “The MVPs are the people who change it, appropriate it, and turn it into something greater.”

The Return of LOLPERA!

2012 Hollywood Fringe Festival
June 10, 17 & 24 @ HUDSON THEATRE | click here for tickets!

LOLPERA is back! If you missed the first sold-out showing of the only epic opera about the Internets (or liked it so much you’re ready for MOAR), we’ve got some great news. Three performances of LOLPERA will be presented as part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival this month and we really, really think you should go.

LA Weekly’s “Pick of the Week,” LOLPERA is a “giddily absurd” opera with a score referencing everything from Gilbert and Sullivan to 80’s power ballads. The libretto is assembled entirely from the internet’s “biggest inside joke”: the multi-user-generated captions and images of the LOLCAT meme.

Check out this video of last year’s performance, buy your tickets, and tell them Cheezburger says O HAI:

Featured Cheezburger: Heather Logue

A new feature wherein we gaze into Cheezburger, Cheezburger gazes back at us, and you get the who, what, where and when about the people working hard for your Internet!

Past Featured Cheezburger posts: Heather Bradley, Will Sharick, Matthew Martell, Kirsten Martin, JM Presley, Tori Wadzita.

Heather “poppylady” Logue | Community Support Specialist

What do you do and how long have you been doing it?
I’m part of Cheezburger’s Community Team, along with the lovely Tofu and dollydally81 — which means that I’m most likely the person who reads your emails… so please be kind. I’ve worked at Cheezburger since last Summer, and I love it because my coworkers are hilarious, my job is entertaining as hell, and I get to bring Sammy, my gorgeous pooch, into the office. Although she’s always rolling around on the ground, spreading her legs and begging people to touch her. That’s a little awkward.

Do your friends and parents understand where you work?
My friends, yes — and they love hearing all of my stories since they are also crazy cat and/or dog people. My parents, on the other hand, are just confused as to how their English major, freelance writer, grammar-crazy daughter ended up somewhere that can’t spell their own name right. Their words, not mine.

What fictional character would you like to be for one day?
Probably Jem (of Jem and the Holograms of course). She has magical earrings, really big hair and a rock band. I just have a dusty guitar that sits in the corner of my room because I only know three chords.

Tell us a behind-the-scenes Cheezburger story!
The lifespan of any sort of communal food and/or beverage (especially packs of Diet Coke) placed in the Cheezburger break room is approximately 53 seconds. True story.

You used to work for the company that produces Hoarders?
That’s correct! And though I worked on a different show for the company, I did learn valuable lessons about what actually constitutes a “pack rat.” Maybe my husband keeping every band shirt he’s ever acquired isn’t actually that terrible.

Favorite meme right now?
I like Condescending Wonka — because everyone needs a little Gene Wilder in their lives, even if he’s being creepy.

Is there anything you used to think was terrible that you now think is really funny?
Probably unicycles. I used to hate them when I was going to college in a little hippy town, but lately I’ve seen this guy who unicycles by me on my way to work — he has long, flowing hair and sings songs to himself. He just seems so happy… I’ve changed my mind.

What was your favorite interaction with or comment from a user?
I’m not sure if this is my favorite interaction, but I did have one user who kept referring to me as “poopy-lady” in our correspondence. I eventually just stopped correcting her. Then there was another user who thought that poppylady was some kind of drug reference… I’m afraid it’s just about the colorful flowers, buddy, just about the flowers.

Anything else you want to tell us about yourself?
Just that I love being part of Cheezburger. Maybe even more than I love actual cheeseburgers. Which is a lot.

Cheezburger Made You Smile

We don’t always win a Digiday Publishing Award… but when we do, we take a month to tell you about it.

The Digiday Publishing Awards — which happened on April 16th this year — honor overall excellence and breakthrough achievement in digital publishing, branded content and advertising technology.

We received a Digiday Award in the Best Use of Social Media by a Publisher category for an inventive smile-tagging campaign which allowed users to show their approval for a photo or video by uploading their own smile. Congratulations to our partners Crispin Porter and Kraft for sharing in this honor, and thanks to all who shared their smile and sense of humor with the Internet.
